What is Lifestyle Meteorology?
The Lifestyle Meteorology Project is a customized search capability that can
identify places that meet the user's set of criteria for weather, air quality,
hospital location, major highways and a whole host of other factors like bird and
other wildlife species.
The program uses the collection of maps from the IMAP project
as a source for data at locations in the target region. Conceptually, the maps
are "stacked" together to align places on the different maps as shown in the
diagram to the right, even though the maps might have different scales and
projections.
The user is presented with selectors
for various related data sets (for example, the INFRASTRUCTURE WEATHER
IMPACTS section selects from the following data sets:
- Wind Energy
- Wind Loads for Design
- Building Heating Units (a measure of extra heating required)
(called Annual Total Degree Days Below 18 degrees Celsius)
- Building Cooling Units (a measure of air conditioning required)
(called Annual Total Degree Days Above 18 degrees Celsius)
- Severe Ice Storm Loads
The visitor can adjust the significance of various factors to customize their
search. A family with a serious medical condition can, for example, include
medical treatment capabilities in their search as easily as including a specific
requirement for a nearby recreation area or a very low pollen count. As each
parameter is selected, the user can observe it individually, then see its
contribution to the combination of parameters specified. This combination is
refered to as the "active profile".
Once the parameters are specified, the program displays a map of the region which
identifies places that meet these criteria. The user may then click on the map to
"zoom in" to an area and list matching places and the values of the parameters
there.
The user can preserve the selections in the active profile as a "user profile",
identified by the user's choice of identifier and password protected. The stored user
profile can be revisited time and again, or can be used as a starting point for
further investigation.
How can I use it?
